With this third Newsletter of 2016 we take the opportunity to inform you in advance about our future events so that you may organise your programme.
In particular, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the dates of some scheduled events have changed since the circulation of the previous Newsletter (No. 2, June 2016).

The Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne in conjunction with the Hellenic Writers Association of Australia and the Pan-Epirotic Federation present the lecture, “The history of the Greek Typography in the years of the Ottoman occupation” by Dean Kalimniou, dedicated to the memory of Petros Petranis, the North Epirot printer who contributed so much to the Greek community of Melbourne, at the Mezzanine level of the Greek Centre, 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Dean Kalimniou will exhibit Greek publications printed between 1550 – 1841, from his own collection.
COLLABOTATION WITH IANOS
The Cultural Chain IANOS, the foremost place of connection of friends of books and art with the creators, the ideas, the currents and the trends of our era, this year completes 32 years of successful presence with a circuit of bookshops and Art shops, in Thessaloniki, Athens and also on the internet. It consists of nine vibrant shops and includes the website www.ianos.gr, which is one of the largest electronic shops for books, CDs, vinyl records and objets d’art in Greece.
The Cultural Chain IANOS envisions the contribution to and the dissemination of civilisation and culture by connecting people every day with the works and their creators, through a series of cultural events and the collaboration with like-minded organisations.
Additionally, it responds to requests from outside Greece as it has in stock and can send Books, New Editions, Best Sellers, CDs, text books used in Greek schools, Children’s Books, etc.
IANOS now collaborates with the Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne and is at the disposal of our members for any clarification, additional information and request.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Annual General Meeting of our League will be held on Sunday 4 December 2016, at 3:00 pm on the first floor of the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis”, 570 Victoria Street, North Melbourne.
In accordance with the League’s Constitution, this year’s AGM will include the conduct of elections for a new Administrative Committee for the next two years (2017-18).
All financial members of the League are eligible to nominate for election, if they so desire.
We encourage you to nominate for election and to exhort your friends to nominate so that you create the opportunity for the A.C. to be renewed. The A.C. always needs new blood in order to develop and widen the activities of our League.
You will find the application form for candidature to the elections below in this Newsletter; if you wish to nominate for a position please complete the nomination form and mail it to the postal address of the League below, hand it to the General Secretary at the AGM, or email it to infogaclm@gmail.com, before the AGM. Please note that the nomination must be seconded by two members of the GACL.
Μία ενδιαφέρουσα διάλεξη πρόκειται να δώσει ο γνωστός δικηγόρος, συγγραφέας, δημοσιογράφος και ποιητής Κωνσταντίνος Καλυμνιός την Κυριακή, 27 Νοεμβρίου 2016 και ώρα 3μμ, στον πρώτο όροφο του Ελληνικού Πολιτιστικού Κέντρου, 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
Η πρωτότυπη διάλεξη, με θέμα «Η ιστορία της Ελληνικής Τυπογραφίας κατά τα χρόνια της Οθωμανικής Κατοχής» διοργανώνεται από κοινού από τον Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανό Πολιτιστικό Σύνδεσμο, τον Σύλλογο Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών και Συγγραφέων Αυστραλίας, την Πανηπειρωτική Ομοσπονδία Αυστραλίας και την Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης και Βικτωρίας.
Όπως επεσήμανε ο Κωνσταντίνος Καλυμνιός, η θεματολογία αφορά άμεσα τον Ελληνισμό της Αυστραλίας εφόσον, τουλάχιστον τα πρώτα χρόνια, η τυπογραφία ελληνικών βιβλίων έλαβε χώρα εκτός των συνόρων της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, από απόδημους Έλληνες με σκοπό τη διατήρηση, τη διαιώνιση και την καλλιέργεια της ελληνικής γλώσσας και γραμματείας. Ορισμένα από τα τυπογραφεία αυτά, όπως αυτό του Γιαννιώτη Νικολάου Γλυκύ, λειτούργησαν για δύο ολόκληρους αιώνες, και συνέβαλαν όχι μόνο στην διάδοση του ελληνικού πολιτισμού στη Δύση, αλλά αποτέλεσαν δίαυλο για την εισχώρηση των νέων κυμάτων του ευρωπαϊκού πολιτισμού στον ελληνικό πνευματικό χώρο. Παρατηρούμε λοιπόν ότι το πρώτο σωζόμενο ελληνικό βιβλίο τυπώθηκε το 1476, μόλις 20 χρόνια μετά από την εισαγωγή της τυπογραφικής μηχανής στην Ευρώπη από τον Γουτεμβέργιο.
Επίσης, τόνισε ο Κωνσταντίνος Καλυμνιός, αναπόσπαστα συνδεδεμένη με την ελληνική τυπογραφία κατά τα χρόνια της Οθωμανικής Κατοχής υπήρξε η εμφάνιση των Ελλήνων ευεργετών. Ευεργέτες του έθνους όπως οι Ζωσιμάδες και οι Ζαππαίοι χρηματοδότησαν την μετάφραση και εκτύπωση φιλοσοφικών και μαθηματικών βιβλίων, κυρίως των Γάλλων διανοουμένων, και τα διένειμαν δωρεάν σε νεαρούς Έλληνες. Το σκεπτικό τους ήταν ότι η πνευματική καλλιέργεια και ανύψωση των νέων Ελλήνων θα έπρεπε να προηγηθεί οποιασδήποτε εθνικής χειραφέτησης. Η ελληνική τυπογραφία λοιπόν αποτελεί στάση ξεχωριστή γύρω από τη δομή που θα έπρεπε, κατά την άποψη των εθνικών ευεργετών, να πάρει το νεοελληνικό έθνος.
Η διάλεξη θα γίνει στην ελληνική γλώσσα και θα πλαισιωθεί από έκθεση σπάνιων ελληνικών βιβλίων τυπωμένων μεταξύ 1550- 1841 από τη συλλογή του Κωνσταντίνου Καλυμνιού.
On Sunday 16th October, the launch of the much anticipated annual, bilingual periodical Antipodes issue No. 62, took place at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” in North Melbourne and the results of the Literary Competition were announced.Antipodes is published by the Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne.
This periodical’s longevity has spanned for 43 years making it the longest Greek-Australian periodical circulating in Australia.
Present at the launch were friends of the Greek and English literary word including Mr Kyriakos Amanatides the Honorary President of the GACL, many other academics, Presidents and representatives from various organisations, the media and prize winners of the Literary Competition.
Cathy Alexopoulos, President of the GACL, in her welcoming speech referred to the longevity of the periodical as having expanded its horizons, content, appearance and layout in order to make it more relevant to the younger generation as well as reflecting the aims and objectives set out in the League’s constitution in 1970. The emphases on the quality and the timelessness of the content have elevated the periodical to an important position in the ecumenical Hellenism.
The President made a special mention to the transformed new publication- layout, graphic design, general aesthetics and eye catching front cover based on a work by Helene Athanasiadis, exhibited at the group exhibition Antipodean Palette, in August this year. She acknowledged and thanked Stavros Messinis for his hard work, commitment and input towards all these positive changes, continuing the high standard he set in last year’s publication.
This year’s sponsors of the periodical were the Ithaca Philanthropic Society, Tassos and Toula Douvartzides from Kalimera Kids Omiros College and Vlassis Mavraganis from Mavraganis Greek School. Those together with Paul and Connie Gregory also sponsored the First Prize awards of the Literary Competition. The President thanked all for their generosity. Cathy Alexopoulos continued to thank the Panel of Judges who took part in the Literary Competition, Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yannakis, Mrs Andrea Garivaldis and Mr Dean Kalymniou for their commitment and support in judging the submissions. She also thanked all the participants and the winners of the Competition.
She also acknowledged the work done by the GACL Administrative Committee and the contribution made by the media-newspapers Neos Kosmos and Ta Nea, as well as 3XY, 3ZZZ, SBS and TGA.
This year’s issue paid tribute to the late distinguished Greek-Australian poet Dimitris Tsaloumas. In launching the periodical, Ms Helen Nickas, academic, writer and publisher of works by Tsaloumas, remarked that his was a particularly remarkable voice of the first generation of migrants: his first bilingual book The Observatory [Το Παρατηρητήριο], attracted the Best Book of the Year award in 1983 in Australia. This award became the catalyst for the extensive reach of Australian literature beyond the purely Anglo-Saxon establishment.
Ms Nickas went on to say:
[…] “Dimitris Tsaloumas wrote in both Greek and English, while he also possessed an excellent knowledge of Italian and French. Language was his valuable tool and he used it in all the manifestations, writing, translating and jumping from one language to another with amazing dexterity. The tribute includes essays on his poetry as well as a bibliography for those who desire to study his work in depth. He was truly a poet of international repute”.
The periodical Antipodes does not represent the endeavours of the first generation of migrants only. Increasingly, the most recent issues include works of literature and visual arts that come from the second generation. As Ms Nickas aptly stated:
[…] “The principal characteristic of this issue is the juxtaposition of the first and the second generation, while the periodical reflects our continuously evolving identity from monolingualism to bilingualism and from our purely Greek identity to the wider, bilingual and multicultural identity.
There are indications in the current issue that the second generation reads, values and respects the work of the first generation. Far from dismissing the literature of the first generation, on the contrary, it studies it, translates it and promotes it. There are many examples of this juxtaposition in the current issue”.
Also, Ms Nickas emphasised that “Additionally, the second generation moves into the interstice between the first generation of migrants and the Australian culture, trying to keep the two sides in equilibrium” and she expressed the wish to see Antipodes being sold in Australian bookshops where “one would be able to find it easily on the shelves dedicated to periodicals of literature, art and civilisation”.
As a further tribute to the life and work of Tsaloumas, Christos Tsaloumas (son of Dimitris Tsaloumas), Alex Scovron, Melissa Petrakis and Stavros Messinis recited poems by Tsaloumas or inspired by him and his work.
Then, Ms Andrea Garivaldis, on behalf of the judges of the Literary Competition, read the judges’ report and their comments on the works submitted. This was followed by the announcement of the results of the literary Competition, the conferring of the awards to the successful authors, consisting of Award Certificates and monetary awards to the First Prize in each category (kindly donated by the sponsors) and commemorative gifts and, in turn, the reading of excerpts of their work by the successful authors.

Ο Ελληνο-Aυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος Μελβούρνης προκυρήσσει και φέτος τον ετήσιο Λογοτεχνικό Διαγωνισμό του, τα αποτελέσματα του οποίου θα ανακοινωθούν την ημέρα που θα κυκλοφορήσει το 62ο τεύχος του περιοδικού Αντίποδες, τον προσεχή Οκτώβριο.
Ο Διαγωνισμός καλύπτει έργα γραμμένα στην ελληνική ή αγγλική γλώσσα στις εξής κατηγορίες: ποίηση, διήγημα και μονόπρακτο θεατρικό έργο, από συγγραφείς που διαμένουν στην Αυστραλία, ανεξαρτήτως ηλικίας.
Σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση του Συνδέσμου, που υπογράφουν η πρόεδρος Καίτη Αλεξοπούλου και ο Γραμματέας Γιάννης Γεωργίου, οι κανονισμοί του διαγωνισμού είναι:
- Όσοι επιθυμούν να συμμετάσχουν οφείλουν να συμπληρώσουν την Αίτηση Συμμετοχής, που μπορούν να κατεβάσουν από την ιστοσελίδα του Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανού Συνδέσμου Μελβούρνης (ΑΙΤΗΣΗ ΣΥΜΜΕΤΟΧΗΣ ΕΔΩ: www.gacl.com.au) και να την αποστείλουν στην ηλεκτρονική διεύθυνση του διαγωνισμού: gaclitcomp@gmail.com .
- Η αξιολόγηση θα είναι διαφορετική για την κάθε γλώσσα.
- Οι συμμετέχοντες μπορούν να λάβουν μέρος σε μια ή όλες τις κατηγορίες και σε μία ή και στις δύο γλώσσες, με ένα μόνο έργο στην κάθε κατηγορία και γλώσσα. Έργα με μικτό γλωσσικό περιεχόμενο, π.χ. μέρη διαλόγου σε ποίημα, διήγημα ή μονόπρακτο επιτρέπονται, αλλά κατατάσσονται στην κατηγορία όπου το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του περιεχομένου τους ανήκει, κατά την κρίση της κριτικής επιτροπής.
- Έργα που ξεπερνούν τα καθορισμένα για κάθε κατηγορία όρια μεγέθους, όπως παρουσιάζονται παρακάτω, θα απορρίπτονται αυτομάτως πριν καν σταλούν στην κριτική επιτροπή.
- Όρια: Ποίημα 100 στίχοι (γραμμές), Διήγημα 2000 λέξεις, Μονόπρακτο 15 λεπτά (διάρκεια)
- Κάθε έργο πρέπει να είναι αυθεντικό και να μην έχει δημοσιευθεί ή προωθηθεί σε άλλους φορείς.
- Κάθε έργο θα υπογράφεται μόνο με ψευδώνυμο και το ίδιο ψευδώνυμο πρέπει να χρησιμοποιηθεί για όλα τα έργα που υποβάλλονται από το ίδιο πρόσωπο.
- Κάθε έργο πρέπει να αποσταλεί (Word document attachment) αποκλειστικά στην ηλεκτρονική διεύθυνση: gaclitcomp@gmail.com. Στην ίδια διεύθυνση, και με τον ίδιο τρόπο αλλά σε χωριστό κείμενο, θα πρέπει να αποσταλούν και τα προσωπικά στοιχεία εκείνων που θα πάρουν μέρος στον διαγωνισμό, που θα περιλαμβάνουν το ψευδώνυμο, το ονοματεπώνυμο, τη διεύθυνση και τηλέφωνό τους, καθώς και τον αριθμό στίχων για τα ποιήματα και λέξεων για τα διηγήματα.
- Το Πρώτο Βραβείο σε κάθε κατηγορία και σε κάθε γλώσσα θα είναι ένα αναμνηστικό τρόπαιο και επιταγή χρηματικού ποσού. Στο δεύτερο και τρίτο βραβείο καθώς και στους επαίνους (αν υπάρχουν) θα απονεμηθούν τιμητικά διπλώματα και βιβλία.
- Τα έργα που θα πάρουν το Πρώτο Βραβείο σε κάθε κατηγορία και στην κάθε μια από τις δύο γλώσσες θα δημοσιευθούν στο περιοδικό Αντίποδες, τεύχος 62, 2016, που θα κυκλοφορήσει την ημέρα της απονομής των βραβείων.
- Η προθεσμία για την υποβολή των έργων για συμμετοχή στο Λογοτεχνικό Διαγωνισμό είναι η Παρασκευή 15 Ιουλίου 2016.
The Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne announces its annual Literary Competition for 2016. The results will be announced on the day of the launch of the 62nd issue of the periodical Antipodes in October this year.
The Literary Competition covers work written in either Greek or English in the following categories: poetry, short stories and one-act theatrical plays by writers residing in Australia and is open to all ages.
Competition Rules:
• Participants are required to complete a registration form which can be downloaded from the Greek-Australian Cultural League website (REGISTRATION FORM: www.gacl.com.au) and should be emailed to the Literary Competition address: gaclitcomp@gmail.com
• The adjudication will be separate for each language.
• Participants may submit work in one or all the categories and in one or both languages, with only one piece in each category they choose. Works with mixed language content, e.g. parts of a dialogue in a poem, a short story or a one-act play, are acceptable, but they will be classified according to the language used in the largest part of the text, at the discretion of the judging panel.
• Works that do not comply with the limits of content, as prescribed below, will be automatically rejected and will not be forwarded to the panel of judges.
• Content limits: Poem 100 verses (lines); Short story 2000 words; One-act play 15 minutes’ duration.
• All submissions should be the original work(s) of the authors and should not have been submitted in another competition or have been previously published.
• Each work submitted should be signed by a pseudonym (nom de plume) and the same pseudonym should be used in signing all the entries submitted by the same person.
• Each competition entry should be sent only electronically (Word document attachment) to the competition email address: gaclitcomp@gmail.com . Additionally, in a separate text sent to the same email address, participants are required to forward their particulars, including the pseudonym, the full name, address and telephone numbers and also, the number of verses in their poems and number of words in their short stories.
• The First Prize in each category and in each language will be a commemorative trophy and a monetary prize. The Second and Third Prizes and any Commendations will be a relevant award certificates and books.
• In all categories and languages, the works awarded First Prize will be published in the 62nd issue of the periodical Antipodes which will be launched on the day of the announcement of the awards.
• The deadline for the submission of works for participation in the Literary Competition 2016 is Friday 15 July 2016.
