Ιn 2011, the GACL committee decided to promote Greek-Australian artists through an annual art event called the ‘Antipodean Palette’.
In the past 5 years, the Antipodean Palette has grown to become a major annual art event in the Greek community, generating discussion and stimulating interest in the Visual Arts by highlighting the exceptional talent that exists in our community. This exhibition offers an excellent opportunity for artists to meet as a collective group and introduce their work to the wider public. The Antipodean Palette is also an ideal platform for new emerging artists to showcase their work for the very first time, whilst introducing them to the process of exhibiting.
A ‘Call for Entries’ in 2015 proved very successful attracting both local and interstate artists, as well as interest from overseas, including an interview by the Greek media station ERT.
In past years, we have been honoured by many noted guests such as Victoria’s former Minister for the Arts, The Hon. Heidi Victoria, Anna Pappas, President of the Australian Commercial Galleries Association, Professor Nikos Papastergiadis from the University of Melbourne School of Cultural Studies as well as local MPs and celebrities.
This year’s exhibition was launched by The Hon. Martin Foley, Minister for Creative Industries, and the Greek Consul General, Mrs. Christina Simantiraki who both delivered inspirational speeches, complimenting the interesting and varied works on display. The Minister also congratulated the GACL for supporting his ‘Vision for a Creative Victoria’ in continually seeking opportunities to raise the public’s interest in culture and the arts.
This year’s ten day event celebrated the works of fifteen artists and included contributions from writers and poets during a bi-lingual poetry afternoon and book launch at the gallery. Artworks included paintings in both acrylic and oil, illustrations, various mixed media, interactive 3D installations, sculptural and resin works, collage, risograph, copper-etch and inkjet prints, photography and silvercraft.
The GACL congratulates the participating artists Angy Labiris, Agi Agyropoulos, Anne Warren, Christos Avramoudas, Con Emmanuelle, Effie Mandalos, Frixos Ioannides, James Raftopoulos, Jenny Dumont, Mary Raphael, Sofronis Michaelidis, Soula Mantalvanos, Thalia Andrews, Tony Pierrakos and the WA group ‘Masonik’.
Thank you also to our distinguished guests, committee members and loyal supporters 3XY, Neos Kosmos, Anagnostis e-Magazine, Omiros College, Kalimera Kids and TouchDown Tours.
It has been a pleasure co-ordinating the Antipodean Palette 2013-2015. I have met talented artists and worked alongside passionate committee members in promoting this worthwhile event. I strongly encourage professional and emerging artists, young and old, to take part in future exhibitions and look forward to seeing the Antipodean Palette continue to grow ‘bigger and better’.

Mεγάλη επιτυχία σημείωσαν τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης Antipodean Palette 2015, της πέμπτης κατά σειρά ετήσιας, ομαδικής έκθεσης που διοργανώνει ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος (ΕΑΠΣ).
Τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης έγιναν στις 13 Αυγούστου, σε αίθουσα της Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon St., Carlton.
Στα εγκαίνια παρευρέθηκαν η Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στην Μελβούρνη, κα Χριστίνα Σημαντηράκη, ο Υπουργός Καλών Τεχνών της Βικτώριας, κ. Martin Foley, αντιπρόσωποι οργανισμών και πολλοί φίλοι των καλών τεχνών και του Συνδέσμου.
Την έκθεση εγκαινίασε ο κ. Foley (φώτο), ο οποίος συνεχάρη το Σύνδεσμο και τους συμμετέχοντες καλλιτέχνες και ετόνισε ότι τέτοιου είδους εκδηλώσεις καλλιεργούν και βελτιώνουν την πολυεθνικότητα και αναβαθμίζουν τις σχέσεις των εθνικοτήτων στην Βικτώρια. Η συμμετοχή των Ελλήνων στην Πολιτεία της Βικτώριας είναι σημαντική σε όλους τους τομείς, είπε.
Από την πλευρά της η κ. Σημαντηράκη (φώτο) ενθουσιασμένη από τη συμμετοχή και την ποιότητα των έργων της έκθεσης είπε ότι τέτοιου είδους εκδηλώσεις αναβαθμίζουν θετικά την παρουσία και την εξέλιξη της πολιτισμικής πλευράς της Ελληνικής παροικίας στην Αυστραλία. Συνεχάρη τους συμμετέχοντες και ευχήθηκε στα μέλη του Δ.Σ. του ΕΑΠΣ καλή επιτυχία στο έργο τους.
Η πρόεδρος του Συνδέσμου κ. Καίτη Αλεξοπούλου (φώτο), αφού καλωσόρισε τους επισήμους και τους παρευρισκόμενους τόνισε ότι οι ομαδικές εκθέσεις είναι ένας από τους κυριότερους στόχους του Συνδέσμου. Η συμμετοχή των δημιουργών σε εκδηλώσεις αυτού του είδους πιστοποιεί την εξέλιξη και τον βαθμό του πολιτισμού μας στην παροικία.
“Είμαστε πολύ ευχαριστημένοι που βλέπουμε ότι η επιτυχία των εκθέσεων βελτιώνεται από χρόνο σε χρόνο και η συμμετοχή των δημιουργών γίνεται μεγαλύτερη,” είπε.
Συνεχάρη και ευχαρίστησε προσωπικά τους καλλιτέχνες (φώτο) που έλαβαν μέρος: Χρήστος Αβραμούδας, Θάλεια Ανδρέου, Άγης Αργυρόπουλος, Κώστας Εμμανουέλ, Φρίξος Ιωαννίδης, Άντζι Λαμπίρη, Έφη Μανδάλου, Σούλα Μανταλβάνου, Σοφρόνης Μιχαηλίδης, Τζένη Ντουμόντ, Τόνι Πιερράκος, Μαίρη Ραφαήλ, Τζέιμς Ραφτόπουλος, Ανν Σαμψωνίδη-Warren, και μία ομάδα καλλιτεχνών από την Δυτική Αυστραλία «Masonik».
Τα εκθέματα που παρουσιάζονται στην έκθεση αφορούν ζωγραφική, εκτύπωση, φωτογραφία, χαρακτική, συλλογή και αναπαράσταση αρχαίων αντικειμένων και κοσμημάτων.
Επίσης ευχαρίστησε όλα τα μέλη του Δ.Σ. που εργάστηκαν επισταμένα και λεπτομερειακά για την επιτυχία της έκθεσης και ιδιαίτερα την Βάση Πέτρου, συντονίστρια της Έκθεσης, η οποία για τρίτη χρονιά φέρνει με επιτυχία σε πέρας το επίπονο αυτό έργο.
Τέλος, εξέφρασε τις αμέριστες ευχαριστίες της στα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης και στους χορηγούς οι οποίοι συνέβαλαν ουσιαστικά στην επιτυχία αυτής της εκδήλωσης.
The Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne is hosting its 5th annual art exhibition the ‘Antipodean Palette 2015’, from 13 August to 23 August 2015, at the Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton.
The exhibition aims to support visual arts in the community by showcasing the works of 12 practicing artists in a variety of media (paintings, drawings, engraving, sculpture, ceramics, photography and digital art).

How it started
The idea for the Cultural League to organise an art exhibition was conceived many years ago but since 2010 we were in the fortunate position to make this dream a reality thus fulfilling another aspect of the primary aims of the Cultural League. The main purpose of the exhibition is to promote the visual arts within the Greek community and giving artists the opportunity to show their work to a wider public.
The crystallisation of holding an art exhibition arose in 2010 during the work of putting together the “Antipodes” periodical. This is the annual bi-lingual literary periodical of the Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne. In addition to literature, the magazine publishes articles in English or Greek and it addresses a range of cultural issues which are of particular interest to Greek Australians.
The governing body of GACLM was unanimous in its decision to extend its activities to the visual arts, starting with a group exhibition in 2011. This group exhibition has become not only a focal point in the events calendar of the Greek-Australian community but also a ten day celebration of culture at its best-during the exhibition we also hold a book launch, a bi-lingual poetry afternoon, a musical afternoon and other events that may arise.

- Sunday 8 March 2015, 3.00 p.m.: Dionisia Moussoura-Tsoukala will launch her book “Gnefologimata” at the Cultural Centre of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, 168 Lonsdale Street, at the Mez. The presenter will be Konstantina Dounis, the co-ordinator Nikos Piperis.
- Sunday 22 March 2015, 3.30 p.m. Dr Christos Fifis will launch his book “Fragments of Life” at the Cultural Centre of the GOCMV, 168 Lonsdale Street, at the Mez. The presenter will be the academic Dr Thanasis Spilias, the co-ordinator Dina Gerolymou.
- Sunday 19 April 2015, 3.00 p.m.: Dr George Kanarakis will launch his book “The Contribution of Greek to Other Languages through the Ages” at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis”, 570 Victoria Street, North Melbourne, 2nd floor. The presenter will be Kyriakos Amanatides OAM, the co-ordinator Jim Alexopoulos. The Panarcadian Association is a co-organiser of this event.
- Sunday 5 July 2015, 3.00 p.m.: Angeliki Ioannidou Bogdani will launch her books “In Life’s Threshing Floor” (poetry) and “Images and Memories” (prose) at the hall adjacent to the church of Candlemas (Ypapandi), 29 Victoria Street Coburg (opposite the Coles parking). The books will be presented by Kyriakos Amanatides OAM and George Pangalis.

- Antipodean Palette From 13 August to 23 August 2015, the Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne will hold a Group Art Exhibition the now established ‘Antipodean Palette” at the Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton. 3. PERIODICAL «ANTIPODES» Volume 61, 2015
The 61st Volume of the literary periodical «ANTIPODES» will be launched in November The person honoured this year is the academic Dr Thanasis Spilias. In the same volume, we will pay a tribute to the work of the late Aristides Paradissis. As usual this issue will publish works submitted by its members such as poems, short stories, studies, essays, book reviews and οther literary works, in Greek and English. Submitted works, in order to be published in the periodical must be approved by the Editorial Committee. All material submitted must not have been published previously and should be the original work of the author. The following length limits apply to each category: Poems: 100 lines, Stories and essays: 2000 words, Studies: 3000 words, Book Reviews: 1000 words. Seven copies per contribution should be submitted; these are non-returnable. The deadline for submitting contributions is the 26th of June, 2015. Works that exceed the specified size limits will be rejected, without involving the Editorial Committee.
Works Submitted must be mailed to the: Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne, University of Melbourne, P.O. Box 4307, Parkville, VIC 3052 and must reach the GACL by the 26th of June 2015. We encourage submissions to be sent in electronic form to – gacl.editor@gmail.com
4. LITERARY COMPETITION
The GACLM organizes as usual the annual Literary Competition whose results will be announced during the launch of this year’s “Antipodes” periodical, Volume 61.
The competition includes works written in the Greek or English language in the following categories: Poetry, Short story and One Act theatrical play.
Competition Rules:
• One entry per category.
• All submissions should be the original work(s) of the author and should not have been
submitted in another competition or have been previously published.
• Submissions may be in either the Greek or English language and will be judged separately for
each language.
• Poems should not exceed 100 lines. Prose entries should not exceed 2000 words.
A one-act play should not exceed 15 minutes duration.
• For each entry four copies of the work need to be submitted by post for consideration by the
judges. These copies will not be returned. In addition to the four copies it would be
preferable if the work is also sent electronically to: konie@live.com.au
•For each work submitted a pseudonym in place of the author’s name should be used.
This needs to be the same pseudonym for all work submitted by the same person. The author’s full name and corresponding pseudonym, their address, telephone number and email, along with the title of the work/s should be placed in a separate sealed envelope with their entry/entries to ensure anonymity. Please complete the attached application form with your submission/s.
• The results of the literary competition will be announced at a special function incorporating the launch of the League’s annual, bilingual periodical: ANTIPODES in November 2015.
All first prize winning works in each category of the competition shall be published in the periodical of the GACL “ANTIPODES” Vol. 61, 2015 which will be launched on the same day the awards are announced. All prize winners will be sent via post a commemorative certificate.

Από 13 Αυγούστου μέχρι 23 Αυγούστου ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος Μελβούρνης οργανώνει Ομαδική Έκθεση Τέχνης “Antipodean Palette” 2015 στο Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton, συνεχίζοντας τον στόχο του να παρουσιάσει την εργασία καλλιτεχνών που ασχολούνται και εκφράζονται με διάφορες εικαστικές τέχνες, όπως ζωγραφική, σχέδιο, χαρακτική, φωτογραφία, γλυπτική, κεραμική και ψηφιακή τέχνη. Τα εγκαίνια της Έκθεσης θα γίνουν την 13 Αυγούστου 2015, στις 6.30-8.00 μ.μ. Ένα πρόγραμμα με διάφορες εκδηλώσεις θα πλαισιώνει την Έκθεση. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες θα λάβετε στο επόμενο ενημερωτικό δελτίο του Συνδέσμου.
3. ΠΕΡΙΟΔΙΚΟ «ΑΝΤΙΠΟΔΕΣ» Τεύχος 61, 2015
Το 61ο τεύχος του λογοτεχνικού περιοδικού «Αντίποδες» θα κυκλοφορήσει τον Νοέμβριο του 2015 με τιμώμενο πρόσωπο τον πανεπιστημιακό Δρ Θανάση Σπηλιά. Στο ίδιο τεύχος θα παρουσιαστεί ένα μικρό αφιέρωμα στο έργο του αείμνηστου Αριστείδη Παραδείση.
Το τεύχος αυτό θα περιλαμβάνει επίσης έργα λογοτεχνών και καλλιτεχνών, μελών του Συνδέσμου μας. Οι λογοτεχνικές συμμετοχές των μελών μας στην ελληνική ή αγγλική γλώσσα θα συμπεριλαμβάνει ποιήματα, διηγήματα, στοχασμούς, μελέτες, δοκίμια, βιβλιοκριτικές, κλπ. Τα έργα που θα υποβληθούν πρέπει να είναι αυθεντικά και να μην έχουν δημοσιευτεί ή προωθηθεί σε άλλους φορείς.
Λογοτεχνικά έργα που ξεπερνούν τα καθορισμένα για κάθε κατηγορία όρια, όπως παρουσιάζονται παρακάτω, θα απορρίπτονται αυτομάτως πριν καν το περιεχόμενό τους αξιολογηθεί από την Συντακτική Επιτροπή.
Ποιήματα: 100 στίχοι (γραμμές). Διηγήματα και δοκίμια: 2000 λέξεις. Στοχασμοί: 800 λέξεις. Μελέτες: 2000 λέξεις. Βιβλιοκριτικές: 1000 λέξεις.
Ως προθεσμία υποβολής των έργων ορίστηκε η 26η Ιουνίου 2015.

4. ΛΟΓΟΤΕΧΝΙΚΟΣ ΔΙΑΓΩΝΙΣΜΟΣ
Ο Σύνδεσμος διοργανώνει και φέτος τον ετήσιο Λογοτεχνικό Διαγωνισμό του, τα αποτελέσματα του οποίου θα ανακοινωθούν την ημέρα που θα κυκλοφορήσει το περιοδικό «Αντίποδες».
Ο Διαγωνισμός καλύπτει έργα γραμμένα στην Ελληνική ή Αγγλική γλώσσα, στις ακόλουθες κατηγορίες: ποίηση, διήγημα και μονόπρακτο θεατρικό έργο.
• Η αξιολόγηση θα είναι διαφορετική για την κάθε γλώσσα.
• Οι συμμετέχοντες μπορούν να λάβουν μέρος σε μια ή όλες τις κατηγορίες, στην
Ελληνική ή Αγγλική γλώσσα, με ένα μόνο έργο για κάθε κατηγορία.
• Έργα που ξεπερνούν τα καθορισμένα για κάθε κατηγορία όρια μεγέθους, όπως παρουσιάζονται παρακάτω, θα απορρίπτονται αυτομάτως πριν καν σταλούν στην κριτική
επιτροπή.
• Ποίημα: 100 στίχοι, Διήγημα: 2000 λέξεις, Μονόπρακτο: 15 λεπτά (διάρκεια)
• Tο έργο/έργα πρέπει να είναι αυθεντικό και να μην έχει δημοσιευτεί ή προωθηθεί σε
άλλους φορείς.
• Κάθε έργο θα υπογράφεται μόνο με ψευδώνυμο, θα είναι δακτυλογραφημένο και θα
αποστέλλεται ταχυδρομικά σε τέσσερα αντίτυπα τα οποία δεν επιστρέφονται.

• Το ίδιο ψευδώνυμο πρέπει να χρησιμοποιηθεί για όλα τα έργα που υποβάλλονται από το
ίδιο πρόσωπο.
• Σε εσώκλειστο φάκελο πρέπει να υπάρχει συμπληρωμένη η αίτηση συμμετοχής την
οποία θα βρείτε στην τελευταία σελίδα αυτού του δελτίου.
Τα αποτελέσματα του Διαγωνισμού θα ανακοινωθούν την ημέρα της κυκλοφορίας του περιοδικού Αντίποδες. Στα βραβευμένα έργα θα απονεμηθούν αναμνηστικά διπλώματα. Τα έργα που θα πάρουν το πρώτο Βραβείο στην κάθε κατηγορία και στην καθεμιά από τις δύο γλώσσες θα δημοσιευθούν στο περιοδικό του Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου «Αντίποδες», τεύχος 59, 2013, που θα κυκλοφορήσει την ημέρα της απονομής των Βραβείων.
Οι συμμετοχές πρέπει να υποβληθούν το αργότερο μέχρι τις 26 Ιουνίου 2015.

5. ΑΝΑΝΕΩΣΗ ΣΥΝΔΡΟΜΗΣ
Παρακαλούμε τα μέλη μας που δεν έχουν ακόμη ανανεώσει την ετήσια συνδρομή τους, να φροντίσουν να τακτοποιήσουν την εκκρεμότητα αυτή ώστε να μπορούν να προμηθευτούν το περιοδικό δωρεάν. Σημειώνεται, ότι ο Σύνδεσμος δεν έχει άλλους πόρους κάλυψης των λειτουργικών του εξόδων και έκδοσης του περιοδικού «ΑΝΤΙΠΟΔΕΣ». Η βιωσιμότητά του Συνδέσμου εξαρτάται από την συμπαράσταση των μελών του.
