Dear members,
A number of you have already attended many of the successful functions organized by our League since the start of the year 2014. With our third Newsletter we wish to inform you of future functions to give you the opportunity to organize your program.
1. UPCOMING EVENTS 2014
– Friday 29th August, 2014, at 6.00pm we invite the community to attend an art show dedicated to our first generation Greek Australians. This is a rare opportunity to showcase the hidden talent within our senior community. Opening night will be on Friday 29th August, 2014 at 6.00pm. The duration of the exhibition will be until Sunday 31st August, with opening hours from 10.00am-4.00pm, at 570 Victoria St. North Melbourne, 2nd floor. Popular singer, song-writer, Anthea Sidiropoulos will entertain us.
– Sunday 31st August, 2014, at 3.00 pm, we will launch Jim Saltis’ book titled “Blessings, exorcisms and curses” in collaboration with EEAMA at Stars International, 1C Bell St., Preston. The book will be presented by the well-known poet and artist, Mr Nikos Nomikos. Books in English will be available at the launch.
– Sunday 14th September, 2014, at 3.00 pm, we will launch 2 poetry collections by Dina Amanatidou, at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” building, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne. The books will be presented by the acclaimed journalist Ms Vivienne Morris.
– Sunday 5th October, 2014, at 3.00 pm, the launch of ‘Antipodes’ Vol. 60, 2014, together with the announcement of the results of the literary competition will take place. This event will be held at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” building, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne. The periodical will be launched by Dr Thanasis Spilias.
– Sunday 12th October 2014, at 3.00 pm, Ioannna Liakakou will launch her latest poetry collection at the Pontian Community of Melbourne, 345 Victoria St., Brunswick. The book will be launched by writer and poet, Mrs Andrea Garivaldis.
– Diasporic Literature 2014- Issue 5- The electronic magazine circulating in three languages- English, Greek and Spanish, titled Diasporic Literature, issue 5 that is acting in digital format alone at http://diasporic.org, has called upon all writers around the world (members or not) to take part and join our voice. In addition the National Library in Cyprus has contributed material that makes this tri-lingual publication a collector’s item. The electronic magazine titled “Diasporic Literature” issue 5 will be launched on December 7th, 2014 by Dr Christos Fifis and it is organised by the Greek-Australian Cultural League, Hellenic Writers Association and Diasporic Literature together. This issue is dedicated to the 40 years of the relentless Turkish occupation of Cyprus.
2. PERIODICAL «ANTIPODES» Volume 60, 2014
The 60th Volume of the literary periodical «ANTIPODES», together with the announcement of the results of the Literary Competitionwill be launched on the 5th October, 2014, 3.00pm. at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” building, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, 2nd floor.
This year the periodical pays tribute to Plutarchos Deligiannis, one of the founding members of the League as well as the first Secretary, whose tireless and dedicated contribution to the advancement of the Greek letters and culture in the Greek-Australian community will be greatly missed. The periodical will be launched by the respected academic Dr ThanasisSpilias.
3. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2014
The Annual General Meeting of our League will take place on 30th November, 2014, 3.00 p.m. at 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, 2nd floor, (lift available).This is an election year and members are not only encouraged to attend but also invited to nominate for a place in the Administrative Committee for the years 2015-2016. For the viability and continuation of our organisation, new, committed and dedicated committee members are urged to consider their nomination to the newly elected Administrative Committee. Nomination forms will be available on the day.
4. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you to renew your Membership for 2014 by paying your membership fee of $25 for the year. We wish to remind our members that they receive the periodical free of charge at the end of the year and that we have no other funds to cover the expenses of the printing of the ‘Antipodes’ periodical and the posting to its members. The viability of the GACLM depends on your support.

Αυτό είναι το τρίτο τεύχος του Ενημερωτικού μας Δελτίου για το 2014, θέλοντας να σας ενημερώσουμε για τις εκδηλώσεις του άμεσου μέλλοντο, να σας ευχαριστήσουμε, για μια ακόμα φορά, για τη συμμετοχή και υποστήριξή σας στις μέχρι τώρα εκδηλώσεις και ευελπιστούμε να έχουμε την ίδια και ίσως πιο μεγάλη και πιο ενεργό συμπαράσταση στις εκδηλώσεις που θα ακολουθήσουν, από εσάς τα μέλη και τους φίλους του Συνδέσμου.
1. ΠΑΡΟΥΣΙΑΣΕΙΣ – ΕΚΔΗΛΩΣΕΙΣ 2014
* Παρασκευή 29, Aυγούστου, 2014, και ώρα 6.00 μ.μ. θα γίνουν τα εγκαίνια της Έκθεσης Πρώτης Γενιάς στο Κτίριο του Παναρκαδικού Συλλόγου, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, (2ος όροφος). Είναι μια ευκαιρία για όλους να ζήσουμε στιγμές του παρελθόντος και να θαυμάσουμε αξιόλογα έργα των ομογενών μας. Η ‘Εκθεση θα λειτουργεί από τις 29-31 Αυγούστου από τις 10.00 π.μ.– 4.00 μ.μ. Σας περιμένουμε όλους με χαρά.
*Κυριακή 31, Aυγούστου, 2014, και ώρα 3.00 μμ. θα γίνει η παρουσίαση του βιβλίου «Ευχές, Αναθεματισμοί και Εξορκισμοί» του Δημήτρη Πρωτοψάλτη (Jim Saltis) από κοινού με την Ε.Ε.Α.Μ.Α. στην αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων του Stars International, 1C Bell Street, Preston.Το βιβλίο θα παρουσιάσει ο γνωστός σε όλους μας ποιητής και ζωγράφος κ. Νίκος Νομικός.
* Κυριακή 14, Σεπτεμβρίου, 2014, και ώρα 3.00 μμ. θα γίνει η παρουσίαση των 2 ποιητικών συλλογών της Ντίνας Αμανατίδου, “Γυάλινος Κόσμος – Εύθραυστος” και «Διάπυρες Εμπειρίες». Την παρουσίαση των δύο βιβλίων θα κάνει η φιλόλογος και δημοσιογράφος, κ. Βίβιαν Μόρρις, στην αίθουσα του Παναρκαδικού Συλλόγου, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, (2ος όροφος).
*Κυριακή 12, Οκτωβρίου, 2014 και ώρα 3.00 μμ. θα γίνει η παρουσίαση της ποιητικής συλλογής της Ιωάννας Λιακάκου με τίτλο «…της μοναξιάς και της αγρύπνιας» στην αίθουσα της Ποντιακής Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης στο 345 Victoria St, Brunswick. Την παρουσίαση του βιβλίου θα κάνει η φιλόλογος κ.Ανδριάνα Γαριβάλδη.
*Η Διασπορική Στοά τεύχος 5 ( 2014) είναι αφιερωμένη στα 40 χρόνια της Κατεχόμενης Κύπρου σε τρεις γλώσσες: ελληνικά, αγγλικά και ισπανικά. Η Διασπορική Στοά, δραστηριοποιείται μόνον σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή (http://diasporic.org) έχει καλέσει τους απανταχού γης Έλληνες συγγραφείς να συμμετέχουν στην έκδοση πέντε του περιοδικού της “Diasporic Literature”. Η παρουσίαση θα γίνει στις 7 Δεκεμβρίου 2014, από τον καθηγητή Δρα Χρήστο Φίφη. Η παρουσίαση θα συνοδεύεται με μουσική τριών γλωσσών, σε μια συνάντηση δημιουργών διαφορετική από τις άλλες. Περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες θα δημοσιευθούν πιο κοντά στην ημερομηνία.
2. ΠΕΡΙΟΔΙΚΟ «ΑΝΤΙΠΟΔΕΣ» Νο 60, 2014
Το τεύχος 60 του λογοτεχνικού περιοδικού «Αντίποδες» θα κυκλοφορήσει την Κυριακή 5 Οκτωβρίου, 2014, 3.00 μ.μ. και είναι αφιερωμένο στον γνωστό και αείμνηστο Πλούταρχο Δεληγιάννη. Ο Πλούταρχος ήταν ένα από τα ιδρυτικά μέλη του Συλλόγου, καθώς και ο πρώτος Γραμματέας του. Παρέμεινε υποστηρικτής στους σκοπούς του Συνδέσμου και για πολλά χρόνια προσέφερε τις υπηρεσίες του από διάφορες θέσεις του Δ.Σ. Η παρουσίαση του περιοδικού θα κάνει ο Δρ Θανάσης Σπηλιάς. Το τεύχος αυτό θα περιλαμβάνει και τις συνεργασίες λογοτεχνών-μελών του Συνδέσμου, όπως ποιήματα, διηγήματα, στοχασμούς, μελέτες, δοκίμια, βιβλιοκριτικές, κλπ., στην ελληνική και/ή την αγγλική γλώσσα. Η παρουσίαση του περιοδικού, μαζί με την ανακοίνωση των αποτελεσμάτων του Λογοτεχνικού Διαγωνισμού, θα γίνει στην αίθουσα του Παναρκαδικού Συλλόγου Μελβούρνης «Ο Κολοκοτρώνης», 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, 2ος όροφος 4. Είσοδος ελεύθερη.
3. ΕΤΗΣΙΑ ΓΕΝΙΚΗ ΣΥΝΕΛΕΥΣΗ 201
Η Ετησία Γενική Συνέλευση του Συνδέσμου για το 2014 θα γίνει στις 30 Νοεμβρίου 3.00μ.μ. στην αίθουσα του Παναρκαδικού Συλλόγου Μελβούρνης «Ο Κολοκοτρώνης», 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, 2ος όροφος.
Υπενθυμίζουμε, επίσης, ότι το Δ.Σ. του Συνδέσμου κλείνει φέτος τη θητεία του και βάσει του Καταστατικού θα διενεργηθούν εκλογές προς ανάδειξη νέου Δ.Σ., για την περίοδο 2015-2016. Η παρουσία των μελών σε τέτοιες στιγμές του Συνδέσμου είναι απαραίτητη και ακόμη περισσότερο η συμμετοχή καινούργιων μελών στο Δ.Σ. καθίσταται αναγκαία. Διατίθενται Nomination Forms (Αιτήσεις Υποβολής Υποψηφιοτήτων).
Παρακαλούνται όλα τα μέλη να παρευρεθούν στην Ετήσια Γενική Συνέλευση, συμβάλλοντας στην επιτυχία της με τις σκέψεις και προτάσεις τους. Θα θέλαμε να σας ενημερώσουμε ότι, όποιος επιθυμεί να πλαισιώσει το συμβούλιο είναι ευπρόσδεκτος.
4. ΑΝΑΝΕΩΣΗ ΣΥΝΔΡΟΜΗΣ
Παρακαλούμε τα μέλη που δεν έχουν ακόμη ανανεώσει την ετήσια συνδρομή τους, να φροντίσουν να τακτοποιήσουν αυτήν την εκκρεμότητα για να μπορούν να προμηθευτούν το περιοδικό δωρεάν. Σημειώνουμε πως ο Σύνδεσμος δεν έχει άλλους πόρους για την κάλυψη των λειτουργικών του εξόδων, και για την έκδοση του περιοδικού ΑΝΤΙΠΟΔΕΣ. Ως εκ τούτου, η βιωσιμότητά του εξαρτάται από την συμπαράσταση των μελών του.

E.E.A.M.A. in collaboration with the Greek-Australian Cultural League invite you to Jim Saltis’ book launch of “Blessings, Curses and Exorcisms, on Sunday 31st August, 2014, 3.00pm, at the Stars International reception centre, 1C Bell Street, Preston.
The book will be presented by the well known and acclaimed Alexandrian poet and artist, Nikos Nomikos. The launch will be hosted by the GACL’s Secretary, Kathy Aronis
A few words about the book from the author:
“Alexandria was the city where I was born, grew up and finally left in January 1949, without hatred or wickedness. One night, after my divorce in 1988, when sleep was minimal and agitated I decided to put some exploitation to my insomnia and started writing my first book which I titled as “Mrs Stamata”.
Many years have logged since then, before finally I seriously went back to the skeletal book to turn it into a novel. The book includes my own empirical experiences and also fantasies that dwelled between my perpetually moving brain and my invisible soul.
The people you will encounter in this novel have lived their sojourn on this planet. Even the prodigal and very beautiful Flora (Madeline) who was lucky to experience the true live from Milton. I gave Sofia a happy ending after the untimely departure of her husband Alecos. Stamata died a long time ago but she carries on living as ghost at the Greek section of the cemetery at Chatby while waiting for the Second Coming of Jesus.
The book takes place in the Alexandrine district and it includes words from the different languages that the Europeans used including of course the Arabic. These days all of us who were born in the magical city of Alexandria, live dispersed on the hospitable planet. We have travelled on new seas and flew over skies and countries we have learned from our Geography books. We have comfortably settled and now enjoy leisurely existences in our old age. Yet are always grateful that we were born in Egypt.”

Η Ε.Ε.Α.Μ.Α. από κοινού με τον Ελληνοαυστραλιανό Πολιτιστικό Σύνδεσμο σας προσκαλούν στην παρουσίαση του βιβλίου του Δημήτρη Πρωτοψάλτη (JimSaltis) «Ευχές, Αναθεματισμοί και Εξορκισμοί», την Κυριακή 31 Αυγούστου 2014 και ώρα 3:00 μ.μ., στην αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων του Stars International, 1CBellStreet, Preston.
Το βιβλίο θα παρουσιάσει ο γνωστός σε όλους μας ποιητής και ζωγράφος κ. Νίκος Νομικός. Την εκδήλωση θα συντονίσει η Γραμματέας του ΕΑΠΣ κ. Καίτη Αρώνη.
Είσοδος ελεύθερη. Όλοι ευπρόσδεκτοι. Μετά το πέρας της παρουσίασης θα προσφερθούν τσάι, καφές και μπισκότα.
Ο Δημήτρης Πρωτοψάλτης γεννήθηκε στην Αλεξάνδρεια από Έλληνες γονείς με καταγωγή από τα Κύθηρα. Τελείωσε το Δημοτικό και το Τοσίτσειο Γυμνάσιο. Μετά τον πόλεμο, το 1946, ταξίδευσε στην Ελλάδα και ενεγράφη στο Πανεπιστήμιο, στην ελληνική φιλολογία. Ξέχασε το Πανεπιστήμιο και επέστρεψε στην Αίγυπτο το 1947 και όπως παραδέχετα θυσίασε το μέλλον για να στηριχτεί στο παρών. Το 1949 μετανάστεψε στην Αυστραλία και εγκαταστάθηκε με τους συγγενείς του στο Σύδνεϋ.
Γνωρίστηκε με μία όμορφη Μαλτέζα από την Αίγυπτο και παντρεύτηκαν το 1953. Το 1959 η ευτυχία τους ολοκληρώθηκε με τον ερχομό της πρώτης του κόρης, για να ακολουθήσει ο γιός του το 1962 και η δεύτερη κόρη του το 1964.
Όμως η ευτυχία δυστυχώς δεν κρατά αιώνια. Τα πρώτα σύννεφα στον γάμο τους ήρθαν για να ακολουθήσει ο χωρισμός το 1988. Το 1993 ταξίδευσε στην Ελλάδα και το 2004 κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο του βιβλίο “Τα τέσσερα σπίτια” και το 2010 το κυκλοφόρησε και στην αγγλική γλώσσα με τίτλο “My Four Homes”. Το παρών βιβλίο το έχει ήδη μεταφράσει και στη αγγλική γλώσσα με τίτλο “Blessings, curses and exorcisms”, που είναι έτοιμο προς διάθεση.

Due to increased interest and numerous enquiries we received following the ‘Antipodean Palette 2014’, which showcased works by professional artists, the GACL has decided to organise this event for keen senior members in our community.
Many of our 1st generation Greek-Australians, grew up during the turmoils of war, and subsequent depression, later migrating to establish a new existence.
Hard working and committed to family upbringing in a new world, there was no time to express their creativity. Now, years later and as aged pensioners, they can enjoy time pursuing their inherent love for art. It is for those who have a keen interest and partake in art as a hobby but have missed the opportunity to showcase their talent.
Participating in this event is Vakkina Panagiotidis, Michael Schizas, Mary Giavasoglou, Maria Tsalamandris, Xenophon Ηarlamoff, Neofιtοs Charalambous, Eleni Charalambous and Litsa Gogas.
On the opening night we will have the opportunity to be entertained by the popular and well known singer, Anthea Sidiropoulos singing some of her compositions and favourite songs.
