On Sunday 17th May at 3.00 pm., Dr Con Aroney will launch his book Flames in the Water Tears in the Sea, a powerful historical novel about one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century, at the Pontian Community of Melbourne, 345 Victoria St., Brunswick.

The book will be presented by academic and writer Konstandina Dounis and journalist Claire Gazis.
Ian Matthews in his review in the Order of Australia Magazine The Order (No 35, Autumn 2014) he writes: “Terrible reality in facts and fiction Flames on the Water, Tears in the Sea by Con Aroney AM, Published by CopyRight Publishing, Brisbane RRP $27.50. It is a curious fact that a novel can often convey atmosphere, emotion and veracity about historic events better than an academic record or forensic investigation.
When Thomas Keneally AO wrote Schindler’s Ark as a prize-winning work of fiction, it was based on copious testimony. He observed, “To use the texture and devices of a novel to tell a true story is a course which has frequently been followed in modern writing.
It is the one I have chosen to follow here, both because the craft of the novelist is the only craft to which I can lay claim and because the novel’s techniques seem suited for a character of such ambiguity and magnitude as Oskar [Schindler].”
Con Aroney has woven a novel around the almost forgotten facts of the rescue of about 300,000 Greek women, children and aged refugees from Smyrna, now Izmir, Turkey, after an onslaught by Turkish forces in 1922.
Drawing on his family’s history, Professor Aroney tells the grim story of yet another of the 20th century’s massacres — but one that could have been infinitely worse but for the work of an American YMCA worker, Asa Jennings. He negotiated with Kemal Ataturk for time to have the Greek refugees taken to the relative safety of Greek islands.
He then bargained or blackmailed the Greek government of the day to supply ships to take the homeless thousands from the port of Smyrna. Both Greece and Turkey regarded Jennings as a humanitarian hero and, incredibly, at one stage he represented both countries. Con Aroney has written a riveting diary of tragic events from his family’s point of view.
He explains, “All major events including the battles leading up to the destruction of Smyrna, the great fire, the evacuation and aftermath are closely based on the actual historic events, although the specific military and social actions of some of the characters are in part fictionalised.”
The book follows an easy-to-read diary format with many short chapters and includes helpful maps and dates. It is a sobering commentary on civilised society that in our own lifetime we have become so inured to the litany of horrors of the Holocaust, the slaughter in Rwanda, the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, the massacre at My Lai that the 1922 Catastrophe at Smyrna has slipped our notice. Con Aroney’s novel reminds us never to forget.”
Tην ομαδική Έκθεση Τέχνης “Antipodean Palette 2014” διοργανώνει για τέταρτη συνεχή χρονιά ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος Μελβούρνης από τις 22 Μαίου μέχρι 1 Ιουνίου, στην γκαλερί “Steps Gallery” στο Κάρλτον.
Σκοπός της Έκθεσης είναι να προβάλει τις τέχνες και να δώσει την ευκαιρία στο φιλότεχνο κοινό να γνωρίσει καλλιτέχνες της παροικίας. Στο πλαίσιο της έκθεσης θα υπάρχουν διάφορα εκθέματα, όπως για παράδειγμα ζωγραφική, χαρακτική, φωτογραφία, πυρογραφία, κλπ.
Στην έκθεση τέχνης συμμετέχουν 12 καλλιτέχνες, όλοι από τη Μελβούρνη και ένα άτομο από την Ελλάδα. Ορισμένοι είναι γνωστοί καλλιτέχνες της παροικίας, υπάρχουν και μερικοί των οποίων η δουλειά θα παρουσιαστεί για πρώτη φορά σε παροικιακή εκδήλωση. Στην έκθεση συμμετέχουν οι: Χρίστος Αβραμούδας, Κώστας Αθανασίου, Θάλεια Ανδρέου, Σοφία Καγκάδη, Άντζι Λαμπίρη, Έφη Μανδάλος, Σούλα Μανταλβάνου, Τόνι Πιερράκος, Μαίρη Ραφαέλ, Τζέιμς Ραφτόπουλος, Ανν Σαμψωνίδης-Warren και Τίνα Σιδέρης.
Τα εγκαίνια της Έκθεσης θα γίνουν στις 22 Μαίου 2014, από τον Καθηγητή κ. Νίκο Παπαστεργιάδη, στις 6.30 μ.μ στον εκθεσιακό χώρο “Steps Gallery”, που βρίσκεται στη διεύθυνση 62 Lygon Street, Carlton.
Το πρόγραμμα θα διανθίσουν με μουσική το υπέροχο ντουέτο «PolyXeni» παρουσιάζοντας δημοφιλή ελληνικά τραγούδια.
Ο Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος κάνει μια σοβαρή προσπάθεια να προβάλει τις εικαστικές τέχνες στο χώρο της παροικίας και να ενθαρρύνει τους καλλιτέχνες να επιδοθούν με πιο πολύ ενθουσιασμό στην τέχνη τους.
Καλεί επίσης και τα μέλη της παροικίας να επισκεφθούν την έκθεση που διοργανώνεται για τέταρτη χρονιά φέτος, να γνωρίσουν τους καλλιτέχνες από κοντά και να δείξουν με τον πιο αποτελεσματικό τρόπο το ενδιαφέρον και την υποστήριξή τους.

Το πρόγραμμα θα διανθίσουν με μουσική το υπέροχο ντούο «PolyXeni» εκτελώντας δημοφιλή Ελληνικά τραγούδια.
– Βιβλιοπαρουσίαση: Το Σάββατο 24 Μαίου, στις 4.00 μ.μ.στο Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton, θα γίνει μια Ποιητική Γνωριμία στο Λογοτεχνικό έργο του ΄Ελληνα ποιητή Σπύρο Καραμούτσου και παρουσίαση της μεταφρασμένης στα Αγγλικά ποιητικής συλλογής «Poet’s Garden». Η παρουσίαση της ποιητικής συλλογής θα γίνει από τον Δημήτρη Τρωαδίτη και η αναφορά στο έργο του Λογοτέχνη θα γίνει από τον Κώστα Παϊβανά. Μια ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση που δεν πρέπει να χάσει κανείς.
– Ποιητικό Απόγευμα: Την Κυριακή 25 Μαϊου, στις 4.30 μ.μ.στο Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton, στα πλαίσια της έκθεσης διοργανώνεται το δίγλωσσο ποιητικό απόγευμα “Μεταμόρφωσις“,στο οποίο θα μιλήσουν 13 ποιητές της παροικίας για τη δουλειά τους και θα απαγγείλουν ποιηματά τους.
– Ώρες λειτουργίας της Εκθεσης: Η έκθεση “Antipodean Palette 2014” θα λειτουργεί καθημερινά Δευτέρα-Παρασκευή, από 10.00 π.μ.- 4.00 μ.μ. και Σάββατο-Κυριακή από 11.00 π.μ.- 4.00 μ.μ.
The Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne is hosting its 4th annual art exhibition, ‘Antipodean Palette 2014.’ The exhibition aims to support visual arts in the community by showcasing the works of 12 practicing artists in a variety of media.
Artists participating this year are Angy Labiris, Anne Sampsonidis-Warren, Christos Avramoudas, Costa Athanassiou, Effie Mandalos, James Raftopoulos, Mary Raphael, Sophie Kagadis, Soula Mantalvanos, Thalia Andrews, Tina Sideris and Tony Pierrakos.
The exhibition will be held at Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon St Carlton from May 22 until June 1, 10 to 4 pm daily. An opening celebration will commence at 6.30pm, Thursday 22nd May with guest speaker Professor Nick Papastergiades from the University of Melbourne School of Cultural Studies. The duo ‘Polyxeni’ will entertain guests with Greek acoustic music.
The 10 day event will include the following book launches, bi-lingual poetry readings and demonstrations.
– 24 May, at 4.00pm we will present the work of well known Greek poet, Spiros Karamountzos. The book titled “Poet’s Garden” includes some of his poems translated into English and will be presented by Dimitris Troaditis. Kostas Paivanas will showcase the poet’s body of work.
– 25 May, at 4.30pm we are presenting our annual celebration of poetry with work by Australian poets, all of whom will be honing in on the cosmic theme of “metamorphosis.” Join them for what will surely be a most memorable afternoon.
– 24 and 31 May, Soula Mantalvanos, an exhibiting artist will speak about her copperplate printing process.
