The Triumph of Tragedy is the story of Vakkina and her struggle to achieve her dreams to be a painter and to own her own business.
Following her from Greece to Melbourne in 1956, The Triumph of Tragedy is the story of one woman’s struggle to overcome whatever fate throws at her, but also paints a picture of what life was like for migrant women in that period.
Vakkina battles to establish her own garment manufacturing business and to succeed despite the social and moral restrictions placed on young Greek women.
Just when she seems to have triumphed, fate intervenes and she loses her husband, Jimmy. Succumbing to community pressure she remarries and she sees everything that she has achieved destroyed. But she battles on to survive, however hard life may be.
Την περασμένη Κυριακή 17 Μαρτίου 2013, έγινε η παρουσίαση του νέου βιβλίου της Αργυρούλας Ζήφου Χωματοπούλου με τίτλο: «Αναμνήσεις Νοσταλγίες Επιθυμίες», στο κτήριο της Ποντιακής Κοινότητας στο Μπράνσγουϊκ.
Τη λογοτεχνική αυτή εκδήλωση οργάνωσε με πολλή επιτυχία ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος Μελβούρνης σε συνεργασία με το Σύνδεσμο Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών και Συγγραφέων Αυστραλίας, με τελετάρχη την κα Καίτη Αλεξοπούλου. Ο κ. Γεράσιμος Κλωνής διάβασε τον εγκάρδιο χαιρετισμό του δικαιολογημένου απόντα προέδρου του ως άνω δεύτερου Συνδέσμου κ. Θύμιου Χαραλαμπόπουλου και η κ.Λούλα Παπαζώη διάβασε ένα ποίημα της τιμώμενης συγγραφέας, αλλά της αφιέρωσε και ένα δεύτερο για το έργο της.
Την εκδήλωση παρακολούθησε σεβαστός αριθμός συμπαροίκων οι οποίοι έδωσαν τα πιο θερμά συγχαρητήρια στη νέα μας συγγραφέα η οποία πολύ σεμνά παρουσιάζεται στο ελληνικό παροικιακό κοινό της Μελβούρνης με το πρώτο της βιβλίο πεζού λόγου.
Την εμπεριστατωμένη παρουσίαση του βιβλίου έκανε ο φιλόλογος καθηγητής μας κ. Θωμάς Γ. Ηλιόπουλος ο οποίος αναφέρθηκε διεξοδικά στο προσωπικό πόνημα της συγγραφέας, το οποίο αποτελεί μία αξιέπαινη προσπάθεια να διαιωνίσει την προσφορά της πρώτης γενεάς στην νέα μας πατρίδα Αυστραλία.΄Ολο το έργο των 140 σελίδων χαρακτηρίστηκε ως «μία κατάθεση ψυχής» και μιλάει πολύ θερμά για όλους μας εδώ στη Μελβούρνη και εκφράζει γνώμες που όλοι μας έχουμε για τη ζωή μας στην Αυστραλία. Ο κ. Ηλιόπουλος παρότρυνε τη συγγραφέα: « Συνέχισε το γράψιμο με όλη τη δύναμή σου ! », μια και όλοι μας δεν έχουμε μέσα μας αυτές τις παρορμήσεις,αλλά ούτε και το ταλέντο της. Τελείωσε την εκτεταμένη παρουσίαση με μία κομψή παράφραση του καβαφικού λόγου, τον οποίο φέτος 2013, τον τιμούμε στο επίσημο «΄Ετος Κ.Π.Καβάφη».

Ως συνήθως η εκδήλωση τελείωσε με πολλά και πλούσια γλυκά και καφέδες, αλλά και με άφθονη ακαδημαϊκή και θερμή κοινωνική συζήτηση. Αξίζουν ειλικρινά συγχαρητήρια και οι δύο πολιτισμικοί μας Σύνδεσμοι της Μελβούρνης.
Someone Else’s War is a novel by Phil Kafcaloudes that spans the life of the author’s maternal grandmother, a reluctant spy and British agent in World War Two. The Novel although fictional, is based around events that actually happened.
Olga Stambolis arrives in Athens in 1936 as an out-of-work actress with no money, few friends and a shame that has followed her across the world. Her skills as a linguist and mimic lead her into the Greek resistance at the time the country is pulled into the war. Even as the Germans march into Athens, Olga continues to rescue British airmen and sabotage the enemy’s vital supply routes. Until the day she is caught.
Meanwhile in Australia, her children are facing their own personal and wartime challenges. One daughter, Nellie, is caught in Darwin as Japan prepares to bomb the town.
Through the entwined stories of mother and daughters, we are taken into the events of two countries and two sets of lives from 1916 to 1943. The book was recently launched in Melbourne by the Greek Australian Cultural League and the Antipodes Festival.
The Greek Australian Cultural League launched George Athanasiou’s second poetry collection, “Tales of Light and Darkness” in front of a capacity crowd on Sunday 21st September, 2008, at the Pan- Arcadian Association of Melbourne and Victoria, in North Melbourne.
Dean Kalimniou introduced the book and spoke in-depth and analytically about all the messages and the symbols embodied in George’s latest work. Dean referred to the importance of the collection as a constant battle between light against the powers of darkness, whether these come in the form of narcotics, the destruction of our natural environment or the latest new age provocations. But what dominates the majority of the works is the essence of love that permeates throughout.
The crowd was treated to some poetry readings and a musical interlude featuring a selection of songs by some of Greece’s best known composers as performed by Anthea Sidiropoulos and George Athanasiou, as well as “The Lucky Country”, a poem that George had written in his previous poetry collection “An Observor’s Tales”, that Anthea has put to music. The author’s wife Monika lent her voice in Greek to one of the songs.
Cathy Alexopoulos, President of the Greek Australian Cultural League, was the master of ceremonies for the afternoon. Both Cathy and Dean praised Athanasiou for his voluntary work in the League and his work as an inspiring and aspiring writer.
