Dear members,

A number of you have already attended many of the successful functions organized by our League since the start of the year 2014. With our third Newsletter we wish to inform you of future functions to give you the opportunity to organize your program.

1. UPCOMING EVENTS 2014

– Friday 29th August, 2014, at 6.00pm we invite the community to attend an art show dedicated to our first generation Greek Australians. This is a rare opportunity to showcase the hidden talent within our senior community.  Opening night will be on Friday 29th August, 2014 at 6.00pm. The duration of the exhibition will be until Sunday 31st August, with opening hours from 10.00am-4.00pm, at 570 Victoria St. North Melbourne, 2nd floor. Popular singer, song-writer, Anthea Sidiropoulos will entertain us.

– Sunday 31st August, 2014, at 3.00 pm, we will launch Jim Saltis’ book titled “Blessings, exorcisms and curses” in collaboration with EEAMA at Stars International, 1C Bell St., Preston. The book will be presented by the well-known poet and artist, Mr Nikos Nomikos. Books in English will be available at the launch.

–  Sunday 14th September, 2014, at 3.00 pm, we will launch 2 poetry collections by Dina Amanatidou, at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” building, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne. The books will be presented by the acclaimed journalist Ms Vivienne Morris.

–  Sunday 5th October, 2014, at 3.00 pm, the launch of ‘Antipodes’ Vol. 60, 2014, together with the announcement of the results of the literary competition will take place. This event will be held at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” building, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne. The periodical will be launched by Dr Thanasis Spilias.

–  Sunday 12th October 2014, at 3.00 pm, Ioannna Liakakou will launch her latest poetry collection at the Pontian Community of Melbourne, 345 Victoria St., Brunswick. The book will be launched by writer and poet, Mrs Andrea Garivaldis.

–  Diasporic Literature 2014- Issue 5- The electronic magazine circulating in three languages- English, Greek and Spanish, titled Diasporic Literature, issue 5  that is acting in digital format alone at http://diasporic.org, has called upon all writers around the world (members or not) to take part and join our voice. In addition the National Library in Cyprus has contributed material that makes this tri-lingual publication a collector’s item. The electronic magazine titled “Diasporic Literature” issue 5 will be launched on December 7th, 2014 by Dr Christos Fifis and it is organised by the Greek-Australian Cultural League, Hellenic Writers Association and Diasporic Literature together. This issue is dedicated to the 40 years of the relentless Turkish occupation of Cyprus.

2. PERIODICAL «ANTIPODES» Volume 60, 2014

The 60th Volume of the literary periodical «ANTIPODES», together with the announcement of the results of the Literary Competitionwill be launched on the 5th October, 2014, 3.00pm. at the Panarcadian Association “O Kolokotronis” building, 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, 2nd floor.

This year the periodical pays tribute to Plutarchos Deligiannis, one of the founding members of the League as well as the first Secretary, whose tireless and dedicated contribution to the advancement of the Greek letters and culture in the Greek-Australian community will be greatly missed. The periodical will be launched by the respected academic Dr ThanasisSpilias.

3. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2014

The Annual General Meeting of our League will take place on 30th November, 2014, 3.00 p.m. at 570 Victoria St., North Melbourne, 2nd floor, (lift available).This is an election year and members are not only encouraged to attend but also invited to nominate for a place in the Administrative Committee for the years 2015-2016. For the viability and continuation of our organisation, new, committed and dedicated committee members are urged to consider their nomination to the newly elected Administrative Committee. Nomination forms will be available on the day.

4. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you to renew your Membership for 2014 by paying your membership fee of $25 for the year. We wish to remind our members that they receive the periodical free of charge at the end of the year and that we have no other funds to cover the expenses of the printing of the ‘Antipodes’ periodical and the posting to its members. The viability of the GACLM depends on your support.
