On Sunday 12th October 2014, Ioannna Liakakou launched her latest poetry collection, «…της μοναξιάς και της αγρύπνιας…» at the Pontian Community of Melbourne, 345 Victoria St., Brunswick. The book was launched by writer and poet, Mrs Andrea Garivaldis.
Launching the book, Ms Garivaldis said:
“I have chosen to speak about Ioanna, the person, the writer, the activist, the friend, rather than speak specifically about the book we are launching today approximately titled “…of loneliness and of wakefulness/vigilance…” because I felt that this poetry collection is the sum total of all the works of this writer who has been in the forefront promoting the written and spoken Greek word for far too many years to mention. And in any case what is time and who is bothered by it?
Before I started writing a brief overview of Ioanna’s literary contribution to the Greek Diaspora, I began trawling through my welcoming speeches of past book launches written for her and rediscovered her broad spectrum of writing styles in poetry and short stories on subject matter that ranged from love, hate, war, peace, friendship, loneliness, deprivation, family, social injustice, inequality, religion, philosophy, music, happiness, pain, memories, grief, migration, asylum seekers, (101) etc.,-a bottomless well of topics that touch our everyday existence.
Ioanna’s preoccupation with such an extensive range of issues and her insatiable pursuit to speak her mind publically produced the book in 2011 which was a compilation of selected letters written to the Greek newspapers. The title “Letters to the World” is in some ways a play on words because most of the letters were published in the Greek newspaper aptly named “The New World”. She opens the book with the quote-“If you fear, do not speak, if you speak, do not fear.” Personally I think that this saying embodies Ioanna’s philosophy on life.
She has produced since 1983, the year she published her first poetry collection, with today’s publication, 13 books- 6 poetry collections, 6 short story books and the abovementioned collection of letters.
She is a prolific writer contributing her works to periodicals and anthologies in Greece and Australia, such as “Antipodes”, “O Logos”, “Nea Ariadni”, “Keleno”, and countless others. She has also written articles, critical essays and presented many books of aspiring writers in our Community.
It would be remiss of me not to mention Ioanna’s incessant voluntary contribution in assisting those men and women who needed guidance in starting out their literary career. Countless are those who have been assisted by her expertise in the literary arena in order to achieve better outcomes in their formative years in writing in the different genres in the Greek language.
She has been bestowed various literary awards by prestigious organisations from Australia and Greece. Her capacity to give to others openly without any monetary compensation has been demonstrated all these years. She was one of the founding members of the Hellenic Writers Association as well as serving on the Board of the GACL for a number of years. For a long time now Ioanna has been holding literary classes in the Greek language at Northcote Library, assisting many writers who were not fortunate enough to learn their language in their homeland.
Ioanna was born in one of the most beautiful parts of Greece-Aigion, a place I call my second home as well. It combines mountains and sea, orchards, vineyards, olive groves, fishing and a lot of ancient Greek history. She was born just before the Second World War years that were filled with austerity and deprivation but Ioanna was inspired by the wonderful environment around her and her warm but austere family upbringing to become the person that she is –caring, compassionate and full of enthusiasm for life.
Some of her short stories are filled with memories of the hardships experienced during the troubled times of the war and reveal the anguish the people from the countryside underwent for survival. She reflects on the youthful dreams and aspirations and comes out from all this fearless, free-spirited and determined. Ioanna also writes about the migrant experience. She has experienced this only too well as a mother of 4 children, a devoted wife, running a business as well as having to learn the language and come to terms with the new customs and norms of her new homeland. She has a positive, optimistic outlook to life and this has sustained all these years in spite of adversity.
I have translated from her latest poetry collection two quotes that demonstrate this-
“Courage is man’s most important quality in life’s struggles.”
“Don’t give up in the face of Adversity.”
And just a few words about the latest poetry collection, as I mentioned at the beginning Ioanna has a lot to say and finds a different writing style to say this in the form of quotes, sayings and poems. She laments about the more blissful years in the following poem-
The carefree years have passed
and the songs and happiness have disappeared
now silence and loneliness
patience and courage once again
silence and loneliness
and ends up touching on another very topical issue of aging…
This latest poetry collection defines once again the inquiring mind and the sensitive nature of the writer.
Congratulations Ioanna for another milestone in your writing path. Continue creating because as you personally said back in March 2003 when we presented your book “…almost the same”, and I quote, “…I am compelled to write because for me it is a way of life, it is my life, I write to find answers.”
I think that you are an eternal optimist and an incurable romantic…and we love you for it.”
Tα αποτελέσματα του Λογοτεχνικού Διαγωνισμού 2014 του Ελληνοαυστραλιανού Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου Μελβούρνης ανακοινώθηκαν την Κυριακή 5 Οκτωβρίου 2014, σε ειδική εκδήλωση που έγινε στην αίθουσα του οικήματος του Παναρκαδικού Συλλόγου Μελβούρνης και Βικτωρίας “Ο Κολοκοτρώνης”.
Στην ίδια εκδήλωση απονεμήθηκαν και τα βραβεία στους επιτυχόντες στις διάφορες κατηγορίες του Διαγωνισμού.

On Sunday 5th October, the Greek –Australian Cultural League (GACL) presented the periodical “Antipodes” vol. 60 and announced the annual Literary Competition results for 2014. This took place in the wonderful atmosphere of the refurbished hall belonging to the Panarcadian Association of Melbourne “O Kolokotronis”, in North Melbourne with a very large number of invited guests and devotees of the literary word in attendance.
The proceedings began with the GACL Committee Members handing over a cheque of $2000 to the representative of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Mr Theo Markou, towards the completion of the newly constructed building.
Mrs Cathy Alexopoulos, President of the GACL, continued by speaking about the role the periodical has played in the Diaspora and indeed in the promotion of Hellenism in Australia. Aspects of her speech could be paraphrased thus:
“The periodical has been circulating in the broader Australian community as well as overseas for 41 years and is the longest circulating Greek-Australian periodical. Its enduring existence is a credit to the outstanding contributions, the excellent work of the successive editorial committees and the visionary work of the Administrative Committees of the GACL. Throughout the years it has featured works by Greek-Australian writers and artists in either English or Greek whose contribution to the maintenance of the Greek culture and literature is assured. Every year the periodical is dedicated to a well-known person in the Greek-Australian Diaspora who has contributed to the promotion of the Greek letters or the Greek culture in various ways. This year the periodical pays tribute to
The president thanked the members of the League who were involved in the Editorial Board, especially the editor, Mr Kyriako Amanatides (ex-officio member) for his dedicated and tireless efforts over a lengthy period of time, also to Theo and Soula Mantalavanos for their contribution in the page design and layout and to Mrs Dina Amanatidou for her meticulous corrections.
Appreciation was expressed to the many artists who not only eagerly participated in the Art Exhibition “Antipodean Palette” in May/June 2014, but also offered their works for the enrichment of the pages of “Antipodes”. Sincere thanks were offered to the many contributors and collaborators of the periodical as well as the generous sponsors -Peter Zapris- Ellikon printing company, Agora/Dialogue- Dinos Toumazos, Tasso and Matoula Dourvatzidis-Κalimera Kids, Omiros College, Con Antoniadis-Security Plus-Roller Shutters and Blinds and Theo and Soula Maltalvanou – OOI Creative Communications.
The president expressed her gratitude to the commitment and the hard work that all the members of the Admnistrative Committee have displayed in the realization of this event. She also thanked the members of the Administrative Committee of the Panarcadian Association of Melbourne and Victoria “O Kolokotronis” for the important support they offered in liaising for the use of the outstanding premises.
The periodical was launched by Dr Thanasis Spilias who congratulated the League for their excellent contribution to fostering the cultural and literary progress of the Greek community in Australia. Below is a short exert from his speech-
“It is an honour to be given this opportunity to launch the 60th edition of this important journal.
Warm congratulations are due not only to the many writers who have contributed to its success but also to the organizers and the Committee members of the Cultural Association.
Yet again, the original aims and the aspirations of this journal are amply fulfilled, and it continues to provide a respected forum for writers and researchers.
The range of interests comprises poetry, short story, research, gnomics, critique and comments in both languages -Greek and English. This provides opportunities for both Australian born and more confident Greek speakers.
I am sure you will agree with me that the journal is a worthy achievement that justly deserves our appreciation.”
At the same event the results of the Literary Competition 2014, were announced by Ms Konstantina Dounis, Coordinator of the Literary Competition as well the Master of Ceremonies for this event. Mrs Alexopoulos thanked the following people who took part in the judging of the submissions- Dr Thanasis Spilias and Mr Dionysios Mertyris.
The certificates were presented to the winners by Dr Thanasis Spilias, Mr Kyriakos Amanatides, Dr Christos Fifis, Mrs Dina Amanatides, and GACL Committee members- Mrs Cathy Alexopoulos, Mrs Kathy Aronis, Mr Kostas Dimaras, Mrs Matina Panagiotopoulou, Mrs Connie Gregory, Mrs Vasy Petrou, Mrs Athina Ginaki, Mr George Athanasiou, Ms Thalia Andrews and Ms Konstantina Dounis.Everyone congratulated the award winners and wished them all the very best in their future literary endeavours.
Drinks, nibbles and amicable conversations followed.

Παρουσία πολλών φίλων των γραμμάτων, έγινε την Κυριακή, 5 Οκτωβρίου, η παρουσίαση του λογοτεχνικού περιοδικού «Αντίποδες», τεύχος 60, που εκδίδει ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος Μελβούρνης (ΕΑΠΣΜ) από το 1974.
Παράλληλα με τα λογοτεχνικά έργα και τις μελέτες στην ελληνική και στην αγγλική γλώσσα, σε κάθε έκδοσή του το περιοδικό τιμά και έναν άνθρωπο των γραμμάτων, ομογενή ως επί το πλείστον, για τη συμβολή του/της στη διατήρηση, και προβολή, της ελληνικής γλώσσας και του ελληνικού πολιτισμού.
Η έκδοση του 2014 των Αντιπόδων φιλοξενεί Αφιέρωμα στον αείμνηστο Πλούταρχο Δεληγιάννη, ο οποίος ήταν ιδρυτικό μέλος του Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου, και ο πρώτος Γραμματέας του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου. Για σειρά ετών πρόσφερε τις υπηρεσίες του και από τη θέση του μέλους της Συντακτικής Επιτροπής του περιοδικού Αντίποδες, όταν άρχισε την κυκλοφορία του το 1974. Μάλιστα στο πρώτο τεύχος του περιοδικού ο Πλούταρχος έγραψε «Το ιδρυτικό και τα πεπραγμένα» του Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου.
Η σύζυγος του Πλούταρχου, Φρειδερίκη, τα παιδιά τους με τις συζύγους τους, η αδελφή του Ελισάβετ με το σύζυγό της Βασίλη, και άλλοι συγγενείς και φίλοι, παρευρέθηκαν στην παρουσίαση του περιοδικού.
Η συντονίστρια της εκδήλωσης, λογοτέχνιδα, πανεπιστημιακός και μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του ΕΑΠΣΜ, κ. Κωνσταντίνα Ντούνη, μετά το καλωσόρισμα και την ανακοίνωση του προγράμματος, κάλεσε την Πρόεδρο, κ. Καίτη Αλεξοπούλου, για μια έκτακτη ανακοίνωση.
Μέλη του Δ.Σ. του Συνδέσμου με τον κ. Θόδωρο Μάρκο, μέλος του Δ.Σ. της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης
Η κ. Αλεξοπούλου έκανε γνωστή την απόφαση του Δ.Σ. να προσφέρει το ποσόν των $2000 στην Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης και Βικτωρίας για το νεόκτιστο «Ελληνικό Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο», τα εγκαίνια του οποίου είχαν γίνει στις 21-9-2014. Όπως ανέφερε η κ. Αλεξοπούλου, στο παλιό κτίριο της Κοινότητας είχε γίνει η πρώτη συνάντηση ομογενών το 1970, στην οποία αποφασίσθηκε η ίδρυση του ΕΑΠΣΜ. Την επιταγή των $2000 παρέλαβε ο κ. Θεόδωρος Μάρκος, μέλος του Δ.Σ. της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας, ο οποίος ευχαρίστησε τον Πολιτιστικό Σύνδεσμο για τη γενναιοδωρία του, παρά τις οικονομικές δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζει ο ίδιος.
Στη συνέχεια η κ. Κ. Ντούνη κάλεσε τον Δρα Θανάση Σπηλιά, αφού προηγουμένως αναφέρθηκε στις πανεπιστημιακές του ιδιότητες, να κάνει την παρουσίαση του 60ού τεύχους του περιοδικού Αντίποδες.
Από την μεστή παρουσίαση του Δρα Θ. Σπηλιά παρατίθενται τα ακόλουθα χαρακτηριστικά αποσπάσματα:
{…} «Είναι αυτονόητο ότι κάθε περιοδικό – καθένα φυσικά στον τομέα του – λειτουργεί ως προπομπός στο χώρο που εκπροσωπεί. Στην παρούσα, βέβαια, περίπτωση, πρόκειται για λογοτεχνικό και μορφωτικό περιοδικό – όπως αναγράφεται στον υπότιτλο του εξωφύλλου. Έχουμε, επομένως, να κάνουμε κυρίως με το πεδίο της λογοτεχνίας: εδώ θα διοχετευτούν αρχικά τα αντιπροσωπευτικά κείμενα της ντόπιας λογοτεχνικής παραγωγής, εδώ θα καταγραφούν και θα δοθούν τα δείγματα γραφής, πριν ορισμένα από τα κείμενα αυτά πάρουν την οριστική μορφή ενός ευρύτερου αναγνώσματος.
{…} Είχε επιχειρηθεί στο παρελθόν – και δημοσιευθεί στα τεύχη 27 και 28 – αποδελτίωση των μέχρι τότε δημοσιευμάτων στο περιοδικό. Εκτός από την καθιερωμένη στήλη Αντιποδικά, τις διάφορες Ανακοινώσεις και Διαφημίσεις κ.λπ., οι κύριες κατηγορίες που καταχωρήθηκαν ήταν: Ποίηση – Διήγημα – Μελέτη – Γνωμικός Λόγος – Βιβλιοκριτική – Σχόλιο.
Οι ίδιες κατηγορίες, στην ίδια περίπου ποσοτική αναλογία, επαναλαμβάνονται μέχρι και το παρόν τεύχος.
{…} Τεύχη του περιοδικού έχουν αφιερωθεί, στο παρελθόν, σε σημαίνοντα πρόσωπα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και ατόμων της παροικίας. Το παρόν τεύχος, όπως σίγουρα γνωρίζετε, είναι αφιερωμένο στον αείμνηστο Πλούταρχο Δεληγιάννη. Πέρα από την γενικότερη ανεκτίμητη προσφορά του Πλούταρχου Δεληγιάννη στην παροικία, αξιόλογη είναι και η συνεισφορά του στο Σύνδεσμο και στο περιοδικό ειδικότερα, κάτι που ακόμα και μια απλή φυλλομέτρηση των τευχών μπορεί να πιστοποιήσει».
Στον δικό της χαιρετισμό, η κ. Καίτη Αλεξοπούλου, Πρόεδρος του ΕΑΠΣΜ, ευχαρίστησε τον Δρα Θανάση Σπηλιά για την παρουσίαση του περιοδικού Αντίποδες, αναφέρθηκε στο σκεπτικό για το Αφιέρωμα στον αείμνηστο Πλούταρχο Δεληγιάννη, ευχαρίστησε τους συνεργάτες του λογοτεχνικού περιοδικού Αντίποδες για την υποβολή των έργων τους, τον Θεόδωρο και Σούλα Μανταλβάνου για τη σελιδοποίηση του περιοδικού, τον Εκδοτικό Οίκο «Ellicon Printers» για την εκτύπωση του περιοδικού, καθώς και τους δωρητές που συνέβαλαν στα έξοδα εκτύπωσης του περιοδικού. Ευχαρίστησε επίσης την Συντακτική Επιτροπή του περιοδικού, καθώς και τα μέλη της Κριτικής Επιτροπής του Λογοτεχνικού Διαγωνισμού για το θαυμάσιο έργο που επιτέλεσαν. Βέβαια ευχαρίστησε και τα μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου ΕΑΠΣΜ για τη συμπαράσταση και συμβολή τους στη διοργάνωση της εκδήλωσης, και την κ. Κωνσταντίνα Ντούνη για τον θαυμάσιο συντονισμό της όλης εκδήλωσης.
Η κ. Αλεξοπούλου δεν παρέλειψε να ευχαριστήσει τα ελληνικά μέσα ενημέρωσης για τις ανακοινώσεις, και τους φίλους των γραμμάτων και τεχνών για την παρουσία τους.
Τέλος ανακοινώθηκαν τα αποτελέσματα του Λογοτεχνικού Διαγωνισμού, δόθηκαν τα Βραβεία και οι Έπαινοι για τα έργα που διακρίθηκαν στις διάφορες κατηγορίες, και διαβάσθηκαν τα σχετικά ποιήματα, και αποσπάσματα από τα πεζογραφήματα.

The Greek Australian Cultural League of Melbourne (GACLM) was established in 1970 by a group of young, dedicated and visionary men and women whose love of the Greek letters and culture bore fruit in the creation of an Association that promoted and supported the creative endeavours of Greek Australian artists and writers. The League initiates, organises and participates in cultural, artistic, social and intellectual activities throughout the year. It organises the annual bilingual Literary Competition and publishes the annual bilingual periodical “Antipodes”.
This periodical has been circulating in the broader Australian community as well as overseas for 41 years and is the longest circulating Greek-Australian periodical – something we are very proud and would like to see its longevity prolonged.
Its enduring existence is a credit to the outstanding contributions, the excellent work of the successive editorial committees and the visionary work of the Administrative Committees of the GACLM.
Throughout the years it has featured works by Greek-Australian writers and artists in either English or Greek whose contribution to the maintenance of the Greek culture and literature is assured.
Every year the periodical is dedicated to a well-known person in the Greek-Australian Diaspora who has contributed to the promotion of the Greek letters or the Greek culture in various ways.This year the periodical pays tribute to Plutarch Deliyannis for his the tireless and dedicated contribution to the Greek letters, history and culture in the Greek-Australian community.
Plutarch was one of the founding members of the GACL, in 1970, and its first Secretary. He also served in various other positions thereafter and remained a staunch supporter till his departure.
At the same event we will be announcing the results of the Literary Competition 2014. All welcome.
